Music in Healthcare Settings: Training Trainers

Lifelong Learning Programme Leonardo da Vinci Transfer of Innovation

Description

The musicians selected to participate in the training have knowledge and experience of music in healthcare settings as well as pedagogical competencies.

The pedagogical approach is based on the transfer of a "toolbox": this will allow trainees to develop their versatility and flexibility in adapting teaching tools, inventing new ones, manipulating and varying them, and ultimately enabling them to transmit this toolbox approach to other musicians.

Objectives

  • to explore and develop high quality training techniques and approaches to working with trainee musicians in healthcare settings
  • to explore and develop key communication techniques in order to impart the core values and approaches of music in healthcare settings and the variety of approaches available

Contents

  • methods and approaches of musical actions in health settings
  • musical techniques
  • spatial awareness and interaction with patients and families
  • partnership with health institutions and care staff
  • ethical issues
  • communication and training approaches and techniques
  • providing adequate supervision to a trainee musician in a sensitive learning environment
  • developing productive and effective training approaches

The pedagogical approach is based on the ability to

  • transfer the necessary tools for a musician to work in health settings (repertoire, improvisation, psycho-pedagogical competences, knowledge of the health environments...)
  • transmit, to question oneself, to think "outside the box", to learn from the others
  • work with a group and to give them objectives
  • observe practical exercises (included in hospitals), being able to give some constructive feedback
  • critically review documents (videos, photos, articles) and synthesize them
  • create your own tools and resources (articles, summaries, videos, choice of music scores including a progression, repertoire...)
  • develop and use technical exercises, warm up, rhythmic and vocal work
  • transmit approaches, techniques and pedagogical variations, enabling trainees to adapt them for use in their own toolboxes

Pedagogical methods and realisation of the transmitted tools by the project trainees

  • experiencing the exercises themselves as trainees
  • conception of pedagogical tools by the trainees
  • role play among trainees
  • real teaching exercises with music and health students/learners as trainees
